Why study Art?

The course is an excellent opportunity for students who have a particular aptitude for art, design, 3D sculpture and painting-based work and wish to take these skills to a higher level.

What will I learn?

The course offers students the opportunity to develop their expertise in a range of mediums and students should be ready to face new challenges and take risks.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum: GCSE grade 4 in Art; Ideal: GCSE grade 5 in Art. Students may be invited to interview and submit a portfolio.

Students who get grade 4 can apply for an interview with the Art Department to see if the course would be of the right level for them. Special consideration may be taken into account for a student who is particularly talented in Art and weaker in other subject areas. It is important to have strong observational drawing skills and a keen interest in art.

Students should understand that the course demands extra‐curricular input within the department to complete a portfolio.  Students will also be required to source some of their own specialist materials and contribute to cover the cost of some of the media in use.

How will I be assessed?

The course will contain the following elements within their coursework and their examinations:

1. 2D Visual Language & 3D Communication and Meaning

2. Develop and produce a personal project from a chosen theme

3. Contextual References project – Extended personal project

4. Develop and Produce a personal project - Externally moderated

What are the enrichment opportunities?

There are numerous opportunities to visit galleries and exhibitions in the local area – for example, during Dorset Arts Weeks – and students are encouraged to make the most of these. School-led visits to galleries further afield and to visit notable public exhibitions are also planned.
