 Why study photography?

Photography is one of the most powerful means of communication in the modern world we live in today and is key within the creative arts industry. Photography is a mix of both artistic and academic skill and enables students to develop and express their own ideas effectively.

What will I learn?

Photography at SNHS is creative and technically challenging. Within the first year of the course students will be taught the fundamentals in photographic process which will enable them to handle materials, techniques and processes that safely underpin all of the Assessment Objectives. Within the second year of the A level students will focus on an independently chosen project which is more personalised to suit the student’s individual needs or interests. It also uses and builds upon the skills and techniques acquired in the first year.

What are the entry requirements?

Students should have a grade 5 in GCSE Photography or an Art based subject such as Textiles, Graphics, Art or Resistant Materials.  Students who achieve a grade 4 or lower can apply for an interview with the Art Department to see if the course would be of the right level for them. We also ask for a grade 4 in English.

How will I be assessed?

Students will be expected to produce two components of work during their time on the course. Component 1 is mainly skills and technique based and will display the student’s ability and understanding of photographic practices. It will also include a themed project for which students will pick their own investigative theme to research and produce a self-directed sketchbook and final outcome. Component 2 will take place during the second A level year and will be an externally set topic in which the student is required to research and build a portfolio of work. Component 2 will also include a timed exam session in which students will be required to produce a final outcome.

What do students do after studying photography?

Studying photography opens a lot of different career avenues and within our A level course at SNHS students are provided with opportunities to experiment with filming, styling, prop design, hair and make-up as well as learning photography. After successfully completing an A level in photography students have a number of different ways that they can progress. A foundation diploma in art and design after the A level course is a great transition into the world of university. In this year, students will explore various different media in art and produce an extensive portfolio that can be used during the interview process for university. Another viable route would be to apply straight to university or an apprenticeship.
