Why study Further Mathematics?

Further Maths is perhaps the most challenging, respected and rewarding A level on offer.  Further Maths explores the subject to a deeper level than A level, and brings in topics that would ordinarily not be met until degree level mathematics, physics, computing or engineering.  This is an excellent preparatory course for those considering reading one of these subjects at university, as well as being a fascinating and rewarding programme of study in its own right.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum: GCSE grade 7 in Mathematics (higher tier).

Ideal: GCSE grade 8+ in Mathematics (higher tier).

Ideally candidates will have experience of the FSMQ AO course in Year 11 and this will help them to progress rapidly through the initial stages of the A level.

How will I be assessed?

The course culminates in four examinations, taken at the end of Year 13.  There is no coursework component.  Students are assessed regularly by class teachers so that the pace and challenge of delivery can be tailored to meet each individual’s needs.

What do students do after studying Further Mathematics?

Further Mathematics is usually taken by those students who want to pursue Mathematics, or a similar subject at degree level.  Other subjects in which Further Mathematics A level offers an advantage are: Physics, Engineering, Computing.  As one of the most highly-regarded A-levels a good grade in Further Mathematics undoubtedly gives candidates an edge when applying to study these subjects at the top Russell group universities.
