Why study English Language?

English Language is the study of human communication. The A Level course develops your understanding of the mechanisms of communication by exposing you to a range of different texts. You will be challenged to debate different views arising from linguistic research, such as the origins and evolution of the English Language; how children learn to speak, read and write and the influence of gender on language and power.

What will I learn?

You will explore the mechanisms and building blocks of the English Language as a mode of communication, as well as exploring how individuals and groups are represented or misrepresented through language. You will also learn how babies learn to understand, communicate and produce language as they develop and grow; how this in turn translates into the early reading and writing. You will also explore different areas of diversity in language (gender, occupation, accents, etc.) and how the English Language has evolved and changed over the past 400 years.
