Why study Core Maths?

This course is designed to support Sixth Form students studying:

Business or Accounting

Sociology

Geography

Health and Social Care

Psychology

Product Design

Biology

Applied Science BTEC

BTEC Sport

You would choose this course to support your other A-levels not to replace them, but you could also choose Core Maths if you just want to continue studying maths beyond GCSE but without the demands and intensity of A-level Maths.

What will I learn?

Core Maths mainly focusses on learning how to apply what you learnt at GCSE in the real-world rather than covering new maths. The main difference between Core Maths and A-level Maths is that Core Maths is designed to be more accessible and applicable to other subjects and real world use.

What are the entry requirements?

It is open to students with a grade 4 or above in GCSE Maths

What qualification will I get?

Core Maths course is equivalent to an AS-level (i.e. half an A-level.)

There are two hours of lessons per week and Core Maths is worth the same UCAS points as an AS level. This is currently offered as a two year course.

How will I be assessed?

Brief info on coursework / exam units etc with timings (e.g. 2 x 2hr papers, Summer Year 13)

If you would like more information please contact Mr Findlay or Mr King. More information can be found on the AMSP website under teachers/core maths.
